Nearly three years after an initial “Grove Operational Plan” was drafted by the City of Miami Police Department, Coconut Grove continu
es to be considered one of the safest neighborhoods in the county.
Beginning in November 2009, Block by Block, one of the nation’s leading national Business Improvement District providers was contracted by the Coconut Grove BID to provide 288 weekly hours of additional cleaning and security services throughout the Coconut Grove District. A cooperative partnership between the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District, City of Miami District II offices and City of Miami Police department shortly followed, allowing the Coconut Grove BID private security and clean teams to work in tandem with off-duty City of Miami Police officers contracted on a weekly basis.
The City’s “Grove Operational Plan” was intended to enhance safety within the District and maximize the relationship between off-duty officers and contracted security personnel, thus making it one of the most unique and successful security models in the State of Florida.
Today, the plan has lived up to its expectations as every Coconut Grove BID off-duty police officer receives a handheld radio and cell phone during each off-duty shift, allowing them to receive “real time” updates from security and cleaning personnel throughout the District.
The City of Miami Police department, under the direction of Commander Richard Gentry, remains responsible for this successful partnership that has made Coconut Grove one of the safest neighborhoods in the country.
