It is called as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, but it is more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The famous New York Yankee passed away from ALS in 1941, but the disease continues to affect the lives of many people today.

Each year more than 5,600 Americans are diagnosed with ALS. The disease can attack at any time, but it primarily occurs between the ages of 40 to 70 and is more commonly found in men.

The causes for this nerve-debilitating disease are still unknown, and the search for a cure continues.

You can show your support by participating in the 12th Annual Lou Gehrig’s Disease 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk at Dinner Key in Coconut Grove.

Proceeds from this event will go to support persons living with ALS in the tri-county area.

The course will take participants on an early morning run along the Coconut Grove coastline.

Registration is $30 for adults and $15 for kids 14 and younger.

There’s a definite party vibe, all led by general manager Deano Kastis, who breaks into spontaneous dance a few times during the evening. Kastis, who moved to Coconut Grove from Tampa to oversee the new location, greets most patrons at the door, is quick to recommend a good Lebanese beer, and breaks a few plates (which looks like an extremely effective form of stress relief). It’s all in a night’s work.

In an effort to enhance the physical appearance of storefronts and buildings within the Coconut Grove Business District, the Façade Improvements Matching Grant Program was created in 2011. The program assisted tenants and property owners with the costs of upgrading building facades. It offered 50/50 matching grants with a maximum grant from the BID of up to $3,500 per applicant.

We are happy to announce that the Façade Improvements Matching Grant Program is back and even better than before! This year’s program offers you $5,000 for your $2,500. In other words, you spend a maximum of $7,500, and the BID will provide $5,000 with only $2,500 actually coming out of your pocket. Please note, ground floor commercial businesses will receive top funding priority. Applicants must be located within the Coconut Grove Business District.
